Bidriware is first cast from white brass. The cast is filed down to create a smooth surface. The surface is covered with a solution that gives the piece a black film. The artist draws their design into this black film and then uses a chisel to engrave the final design. Pure silver is hammered into the indentations left from the chisel. Next, the piece is buffed to remove the black film. Once the black film is removed, the silver inlay blends into the color of the white brass. In order to make the silver stand out, the artist covers the piece in another solution which darkens the white brass, but does not darken the silver. The solution is removed from the item and the final product shows a beautiful contrast of a dark patina and the silver designs.
